We’re celebrating English wine week!
The English wine scene has got people talking in recent years and you can see why. WineGB has reported that in 2022, 12.2 million bottles of wine were produced in Great Britain, a hefty increase of 130% from 2017!
English wine is most famous for its Champagne grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. One vineyard is even hosting a “taste-off”, pitching English wine against French Champagne.
There are 943 vineyards and 209 wineries, many hosting celebratory events for English Wine Week, which runs from 15th - 23rd June 2024.
How to get involved in English Wine Week 2024
Why not take a trip to an English vineyard at the weekend? It’s the ultimate way to immerse yourself and have a great day out in gorgeous surroundings. These are some of our top picks for getting involved with English Wine Week at a vineyard near you.
Flint Vineyard in Norfolk hosts regular tours of their vineyard, taking you from vines to wine-tasting with the option to add a paired lunch.
Vineyards of Hampshire are hosting Fizz Fest on Sunday 23rd June, bringing together several wineries to showcase 20 still and sparkling wines.
Rathfinny Estate invites you to join them to try their sparkling wine paired with seafood on Saturday 22nd June. No pre-booking is necessary.
If you can’t make it to an event this week, why not host an English wine tasting at home?
If you’ve not tried English wine, cans are the perfect format to sample different wines without committing to whole bottles. Our English wine selection has grown larger with the recent arrival of two award-winning wine spritzers from Nania’s Vineyard.
The spritzers were best sellers at our recent pop-up in Battersea Power Station and we can see why. They’re light, delicious and so refreshing.
The Yuzu and Elderflower spritz is made using English white wine and was awarded a silver medal at this year’s Independent Canned Wine Awards. The English rosé and raspberry and pomegranate spritz impressed the judges too, taking a bronze medal.
Nania’s Vineyard’s still wine range includes an orange wine and a Pinot Noir. The orange is a low-intervention skin-contact white wine made with 100% Bacchus grapes grown deep in the Malvern Hills. It’s a super approachable and food-friendly orange wine with tropical fruit notes on the nose and palate.
Nania’s Pinot Noir is a low-intervention English red wine made from 60% Pinot Meunier and 40% Pinot Noir grapes. Fermented with wild yeasts, this red is delicate with notes of summer fruits. It’s a light-bodied red that works well chilled.
Flint Vineyard is based in Norfolk and has recently released their first canned wine as part of their experimental Flint Labs project.
Their number #1 Hazy Bacchus is a real treat and is seriously limited edition. It’s tropical, textured and fresh with an oxidative character. Low intervention, no filtration and zero sulphite additions make for a hazy and delicious skin-contact wine. Best enjoyed lightly chilled.
Cheers to English Wine Week 2024!
