A cheats guide to Malbec
5 things to know about Malbec wine
It’s one of the most widely known grape varieties in the world and we can see why. You know what you’re getting with a Malbec - it’s equivalent to a comforting, warming hug in a wine glass - or can! With aromas of red berries, plums, blackberries and hints of cocoa, tobacco and vanilla make for a perfect combination. But, how much do you really know about Malbec? We’ve compiled our top 5 things we think you should know about Malbec.
Malbec grapes originated in France, not Argentina.
Most of us will be familiar with the famous pairing of Argentinian steak with Malbec and for good reason. It’s the country’s most planted grape and is renowned the world-over. However, the Malbec grape is actually from South-West France where it is used in red Bordeaux blends.
Malbec looks purple in the glass.
Malbec really stands out from other red wines when you see it in the glass. The reason why? Its colour is unlike any other wine. It has distinct purple tones with hints of magenta, too.
Malbec is grown all over the world.
Malbec grapes are grown in New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Australia, South Africa, the USA and of course the aforementioned France and Argentina.
Malbec is thick-skinned and loves the sun.
Malbec grapes grow best in high-elevation spots where it’s warm and sunny in the daytime. This helps to ripen the skins and adds to the colour pigmentation.
It’s one of our most-requested wines.
