International Grenache Day
Red wine is the Sad Girl Autumn staple.
Think chunky knits and boots, crackling fires and evenings wiled away at pubs with a bottle (or two) of a full-bodied fruity red and you’re there.
So, it makes sense then that grenache – a naturally sweet juicy red responsible for the production of fan favourites Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Rioja – gets a whole day of celebration in September.
Once described as a ‘poor man’s pinot’, grenache has, in recent years, undergone a glitzy makeover. Now one of the leading grape varieties among artisanal winemakers, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Brixton Wine Club are big fans (check out our September Juice Box for proof).
For starters, it is an eco-superstar, withstanding droughts and extreme temperature climates, and is completely self-sustaining, able to grow in the poorest soils. It’s versatile and can be enjoyed both as a youthful light-bodied and fruity tipple and as an easily complex, full-bodied glass. The grape is also frequently blended with popular varieties like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon – acting as a sort of supporting star to the Leonardo DiCaprios of the wine world if you will.
So how do you celebrate wines underdog on International Grenache Day you ask?
For starters, you should check out the red wine section and see what delicious Grenache wines there are available. May we suggest trying the Hands Off The Red Wine which is a Grenache blend. Or why not try the Canned Wine Co’s Old Vine Garnacha, for when the cold nights really kick in?
Winter – bring it on.
