Jancis Robinson’s Canned Wine Edit

Recently acclaimed wine writer, journalist and critic Jancis Robinson went to a South African wine tasting where there were over 120 different wines to try. The one that stood out? A canned wine. Spoiler alert: it was this one.

The case for canned wine.

She went on to write a piece all about canned wine for the Financial Times which you can read here. In the article, she discusses the traditional vessel and volume that we are expected to consume wine in; glass bottles, 750ml.

There have been many occasions whilst browsing in wine shops when I see wines that I’d like to try, but am instantly put off by the price tag of a bottle. (That, and my inner thoughts telling me that I might not like it and that it’d be a waste of wine and money.) Cans are the perfect middle ground for the experimental wine drinker.

Aside from being able to sample wines with minimal risk to your bank balance, cans are an environmental win. Without the weight of the glass bottle, they can be shipped around the world with a much smaller carbon footprint. Also, aluminium is infinitely recyclable whereas glass has to be melted in 1500-degree heat to be re-used. Yikes.

At the end of Jancis’ article, the rounded up her top canned wines which I’ll share with you now. If you’ve not tried these wines yet, now is the time to see what all the fuss is about. They are available to buy in packs of 6 (the equivalent of 2 bottles) and the Canned Wine Co’s Garnacha is in the 4 Can Simply Red box for October.

Cheers!
